Harvard Opens Free Skating Rink in Allston

Harvard University opened the Harvard Allston Skating Rink, a free skating rink in Allston located at 168 Western Avenue. The 40 by 60 foot temporary rink is open to the public Fridays and weekends through March 28, 2010. The rink is located indoors with a seating area and bathroom. Limited pairs of skates are available on a first come first served basis free of charge or skaters can bring their own skates.

Open Saturday, January 16, 2010 to March 28, 2010

Fridays 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Sundays 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The rink will also host special hours on:

Monday, Feb. 15th to Friday, Feb. 19th--10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Harvard Allston Partnership Fund

Applications have been accepted for the second round of Harvard Allston Partnership Fund grant funding and proposals are being reviewed by the Harvard Allston Partnership Fund Advisory Committee. Grants are expected to be awarded in early 2010.  

New Library Park in Allston will be quiet, green, tree-filled learning space

Harvard University planners presented preliminary designs to residents of Allston for Library Park, the new 1.74-acre public park to be constructed behind the Honan-Allston Branch of the Boston Public Library on North Harvard Street. The current vacant site, once home to a concrete plant, will be transformed into a tree-filled oasis. The park will be completed in 2011.  

Harvard Allston Partnership Fund Distributes $100,000 in Grants to Community Projects

Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Harvard President Drew Faust awarded $100,000 in grants to six local nonprofit organizations serving North Allston-Brighton at an awards celebration on June 26, 2009.

This first round of grants is part of the $500,000 5-year Harvard Allston Partnership Fund, created last year by Harvard and the City of Boston in collaboration with the Allston community, to support neighborhood improvement projects, cultural enrichment, and educational programming.

Harvard Allston Farmers' Market moves to Fridays

Kicking off its second year, the Harvard Allston Farmers' Market runs every Friday from 3-7 p.m. from June 19th- October 30th.  The market is conveniently located at the intersection of North Harvard Street and Western Avenue in Allston. Allston-Brighton Community Survey/Needs Assessment

The objective of the survey is to broaden participation by Allston-Brighton community residents in comprehensive planning for community benefits associated with Harvard¹s Institutional Master Plan, which is currently being refined.  Allston-Brighton residents participating in the survey provided their thoughts about community needs and future projects and improvements in which they would like to see Harvard participate.

Library Park Planning Kick-Off Picnic

On May 28, 2008, Harvard hosted a community-wide picnic with Allston neighbors and representatives of the City of Boston to begin the planning process for Library Park, a new park to be built behind the Honan-Allston Library.  Over 400 people attended the picnic on a beautiful spring evening to share their thoughts and ideas about the planning and design for the new neighborhood park.

City Board Gives Approval to Allston Science Complex Plans

Harvard University has received the approval from the Board of Directors of the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) for plans for the Harvard Allston Science Complex. The four building complex, to be located on Western Avenue in Allston, is slated to become the new home of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and other emerging interdisciplinary scientific initiatives at Harvard. The announcement follows an extensive review process with the Harvard Allston Task Force, the Allston community and the City of Boston, and marks an important milestone in Harvard's ongoing effort to create an extended campus in Allston.

Harvard University Submits Multi-decade Master Plan for Harvard in Allston

Harvard University unveiled a vision for its future, filing with the City of Boston a proposed Institutional Master Plan for the first stage of the physical evolution of an interdisciplinary campus in Allston, including new areas for science, professional schools, the arts, and housing, as well as new open spaces and amenities for the community.
